2025: A Year in Review

Today, on the last day of 2025, I’m happy to say that it’s been a good year, personally and professionally. This year:

  • My business made more money than in 2024.

  • I got a new client while going above and beyond for my current ones.

  • I rolled with the punches.

  • Four of my short stories found homes.

    • One of those stories is nominated for a 2025 ‘best of’ readers’ poll.

  • I took an amazing trip to Hong Kong that inspired a short story and an article that will appear in the North Bay Bohemian next month.

I could go on with a few more bullet points, but I would much rather spend the rest of this excellent day reflecting on the year that was and not worry too much about the year ahead. I’ve been in the freelance writing game for 10 years, something I couldn’t have imagined when I found my first client in 2015. At the time, I didn’t think that making a career out of it would be possible.

There have been good and bad years, lean and fat months, highs and lows that people with traditional jobs may not experience in their day to day. And, who knows, I may one day rejoin them with full-time, in-person, W2 work. I’ve always wanted to live in San Francisco, after all. Maybe 2026 will be the year that some company there recognizes my value and lets me fulfill one of my life’s dreams.

And even if that doesn’t happen in 2026, that’s okay. There are still words to write, stories to tell and read. Much of this life’s happiness is within my grasp from where I’m at now. Yeah . . . today’s what matters. And today, things are good.

Happy New Year, everyone.
