On Working Every Day

Stephen King's On Writing is a great book. I just want to get that out of the way. I've read it multiple times, and I think it offers writers of all stripes a plethora of useful advice.

For me, one part of On Writing sticks out. I don't remember the exact page, but King's message is clear: writers should write every day. Having been in the freelance/creative writing game for a while, I can finally see where he's coming from.

I work every day. There are deadlines to meet, emails to answer, and editing (there is always editing). But that's not bad. Believe it or not, I really enjoy it. Working every day provides a flexibility that no normal Monday-Friday 9-5 job has. Why not work 5-6 hours each day than 8 hours five days a week?

Maybe that's just the way I am. When I was a teacher, I enjoyed my days off (even though they were few and far between). Yet I prefer the way things are now: some work every day instead of a lot of work five days a week.

I know it's not for everyone, but I can't recommend it enough.
